It was the time when the Spanish terrorized the indigenous people of South America.

After the lost battle of Lagunillas (around 1500), the Spanish mutilated about 150 Mapuche warriors who had lost to them.

They chopped off their right hands and cut off a piece of their noses. Because of this, the Mapuche became even more incensed against the Spaniards.

Galvarino, a Mapuche chief, after having his right hand chopped off, nonchalantly offered the Spaniards his right hand as well.

He then asked to be killed.

But Governor García Hurtado de Mendoza released him, along with the other mutilated warriors. They were to serve as a deterrent to others.

Galvarino immediately met with the Mapuche chief leader and asked him to be allowed to administer justice.

They gave him a squadron of men to take with him. Galvarino had lances tied to his stumps.

The Battle of Millarapue followed in which Galvarino again fought Governor Mendoza and his soldiers,

But they lost again.

The Spaniards offered to spare his life if he would take their side.

But Galvarino replied that he would rather die than live like the Spaniards.

And that his only regret was that his death would prevent him from ripping the Spaniards apart with his teeth.

Galvarino was executed.

And the Mapuche had another 300 years of struggle against the Spaniards ahead of them.
