In 1959, 69 black adolescents (ages 13 to 17) were locked inside a dormitory at the Industrial School for Negro Boys in Wrightsville. A mysterious fire occurred at night while they were sleeping. 21 of them died and 48 managed to escape by tearing the metal mesh from the windows. It is the worst fire record ever recorded in Arkansas history. The guys got engaged for a variety of reasons. Some were orphans or homeless. Others were there for petty crimes. A boy named William Piggee rode a white boy's bike despite his mother saying he was fine. "The science of crime scene preservation existed in 1959.
