On this day in 2006 the life of a brutal dictator came to a very public end.

Saddam Hussein was the dictator who led Iraq through war, troubling times and a reign of terror until he was finally apprehended hiding in a hole under a remote farm house in 2003 following the US/UK led invasion.

Although the fall out of the war itself led to more controversy, the downfall of a man who would torture and gas his own people was celebrated across the world.

He was put on trial for crimes against the Kurds, found guilty of mass murder and hanged on 30th December 2006.
