Martin Luther King removes a burnt cross from his lawn that was placed there by the Ku Klux Klan, 1960

Prominent civil rights activist MLK is seen here with his son, removing a burnt cross from his lawn. The cross was placed there and set on fire the night before by the KKk in an attempt to scare King. Other African-Americans experienced the same intimidation tactics that same evening.

King endured years of harassment during his campaign for equal rights for African Americans. His participation was so stressful that during his autopsy, it was discovered that he had the heart of a 60-year-old man, despite only being 39 at the time of his death.

King is probably most famous for his iconic speech "I have a dream," which is considered one of the most famous speeches of all time. We will let you read a small excerpt from it here:

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed. We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.

I have a dream that one day out in the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice."

King was assassinated in 1968 while out supporting a worker's rally. He was just 39 years old.

Despite dying at a young age, King's efforts in getting recognition of the struggles of African Americans has solidified itself in not only American but Global history. Today, on January 15th, his legacy is celebrated and remembered, and it inspires people, both young and old, to fight the evil entity that exists in our society,
