But it isn't one of the most romantic. The reason for that is because there is only one eligible bachelor for every four of its glamorous girls. Mrs. Peggy Glenie, manageress of the Castle Hotel said, “The shortage of men is terrible”. Every evening groups of two or three girls go into Mrs. Glene's her just to pass away the time. Their other sources of amusement are nearby river, a ruined castle and a hall - and a deserted Lover's Lane. Some of the young man of the village are lured away by the towns when they start work, but return to claim their childhood sweethearts. But with that four-to-one ratio there are a lot of girls without sweethearts to return. The reactor, The Rev. Ernest Street has about 25 wedding a year in Bramber and adjoining village of Beeding.
